Following a long layoff for the All-Star break and the bye week, the Habs were back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Islanders. It was a back-and-forth affair that needed over time and after Montreal killed off a penalty, Mike Matheson potted the winner for a 4-3 victory.
The Habs couldn’t muster up much offensively on Saturday night against Ottawa. While they were able to get through the first period tied, things went downhill from there as they fell 5-0.
Not long after learning they’d be without Cole Caufield for the rest of the season, the Habs were in action on Saturday night in Toronto. Rem Pitlick moved up the lineup in Caufield’s absence and made the most of his chances, potting the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory.
It was another quiet night offensively for the Canadiens on Saturday as they weren’t able to give Samuel Montembeault much goal support in spite of a strong performance from the netminder. Two early goals were all the Islanders needed as they picked up the 2-1 victory.
The third period on Saturday night featured a rare offensive outburst from both teams as they combined for five goals. The Habs picked up the extra one of those and that was the difference-maker as they picked up a 5-4 victory over St. Louis.
The Habs closed off 2022 with a resounding thud on Saturday afternoon as Jake Allen set a new career high in goals allowed in a game as Washington picked up an easy 9-2 victory.
Jake Allen had a strong showing in Colorado on Monday night but while he was able to steal the Habs one point, Montreal couldn’t come away with the other as the Avalanche picked up the 2-1 overtime victory.
The Habs played a rare afternoon weekday game on Friday in Chicago. The Blackhawks tied the game late in the third, eventually setting the stage for Kirby Dach to get some revenge against his former team as he scored the winner in the shootout.
It looked as if the Habs were going to lose their third straight on Saturday night but a late goal from Cole Caufield forced overtime and Montreal eventually came away victorious in the shootout, beating the Flyers 5-4.
