It took a while for the Canadiens to make their first cuts but they did so following Saturday’s game against Toronto, announcing that they’ve assigned 27 players to Laval.
Players on AHL or tryout contracts who were sent down are as follows:
Goalies
Luke Cavallin, Hunter Jones
Defence
Zack Hayes, Josh Jacobs, Chris Jandric, Simon Motew, Jacob Paquette, Vincent Sevigny, Tyler Wotherspoon
Forwards
Vincent Arseneau, Alex Beaucage, Laurent Dauphin, Israel Mianscum, Logan Nijhoff, Jakov Novak, Charles Savoie
Of those, Savoie and Motew are on tryouts while the rest of the players are either signed to AHL or ECHL contracts for the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, the Habs also assigned 11 NHL-contracted players to the Rocket:
Goalie
Connor Hughes
Defence
William Trudeau
Forwards
Owen Beck, Jared Davidson, Sean Farrell, Riley Kidney, Filip Mesar, Jacob Perreault, Xavier Simoneau, Luke Tuch, Florian Xhekaj
Notably, none of the waiver-eligible players are on this list. It seems likely that will change later on Sunday when the next waiver window opens up.
While it might seem strange that they waited this long to do any cuts, the timing lines up with the start of Laval’s training camp which gets underway on Tuesday. With them not starting camp until then, it didn’t make any sense for the Canadiens to make any cuts as they wouldn’t have had a team to report to right away.
