Montreal’s first trade of deadline week is in the books but it’s not the type of move that saw them send a veteran out. Instead, they swapped prospects with Anaheim, acquiring Jacob Perreault in exchange for Jan Mysak.
Perreault, whose father is former Hab Yanic, was a first-round pick (27th overall) by the Ducks back in 2020. The right winger played his junior hockey in Sarnia of the OHL, topping out at 39 goals and 31 assists in 57 games back in 2019-20.
However, the 21-year-old hasn’t had as much success in the pros with San Diego, a team that has struggled over the last couple of seasons. He had 37 points in 55 games in his rookie year but followed it up with just 19 in 48 games last season. He has been a bit better on a per-game basis this year but still had just seven goals and 11 assists through 31 appearances with the Gulls.
Perreault does have one career NHL appearance under his belt coming back in his rookie year in 2021-22. He’s in the second season of his entry-level deal, one that carries a cap hit of $863,333.
As for Mysak, he was the 48th selection in that same 2020 draft class out of OHL Hamilton. He was a legitimate two-way threat at the junior level and at the World Juniors for the Czechs but like Perreault, the offence hasn’t quite come around.
Last season, his first true full professional campaign (not counting the COVID-shortened season), Mysak had just five goals and four assists in 40 games. He has been a bit better this season, however, collecting 13 goals and seven helpers in 48 contests, most of which were spent on the fourth line with head coach Jean-Francois Houle showing hesitance to move him up in the lineup. Mysak is also in the second season of his entry-level deal. He was 24th in our prospect rankings for this season.
