February was a month of contrasts for Montreal’s prospect pool. In Laval, injuries decimated their roster and no one really had a big month offensively. Meanwhile, at the junior level, there were some impressive performances that earned them one of our three stars.
The injuries continue to pile up for Laval which has put a dent in their production. However, they were still able to tread water last week, picking up a pair of victories in their four games to hang around the mix of avoiding the play-in round for the playoffs.
Montreal’s trip to Western Canada certainly didn’t get off to a good start but the second half of the week was certainly better for the Canadiens as they picked up a pair of wins with Montreal’s top line leading the way.
The Habs didn’t win the battle of video reviews on Saturday night in Edmonton as all three reviews went the way of the home side. However, Montreal won the battle on the scoreboard by scoring three more than the Oilers, skating away with the 5-2 victory.
The 2022 trade deadline is just a few weeks away and the Habs are expected to be busy. With that in mind, it’s time to bring back our trade odds series to forecast who could be on the move. We begin with the defencemen and goalies.
Nick Suzuki played on a whole other level on Thursday night as he led the Habs to an entertaining game that resulted in a 5-4 overtime win over the Calgary Flames, the hottest team in the league.
The depth of Montreal’s prospect pool really starts to show in this group. There’s a strong case to make for most of these players to be in the top 20 but because of the volume of prospects currently in the organization, they come up a little short.
Montreal swung their second trade of the season with Calgary on Wednesday but it wasn’t anywhere near as significant as the first as they dealt goalie Michael McNiven to the Flames for future considerations.
The Habs went into Winnipeg on Tuesday night looking to start their Western road trip on a winning note. They got a rare four-goal comeback but the penalty kill let them down as they fell 8-4.
