It didn’t take long for the Habs to get a deal done with recently-acquired Andrew Shaw. On Monday night, they announced that they had agreed to terms on a six year, $23.4 million contract. The deal does not contain a no-trade or no-move clause according to ESPN/TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.
Shaw was acquired last Friday in exchange for both of Montreal’s second round picks in 2016. Last season, he played in 78 games with Chicago, scoring 14 goals and adding 20 assists to go along with 69 PIMS and a +11 rating. He also picked up six points in six postseason contests.
The 24 year old had spent his entire NHL career with the Hawks until the trade, playing in 322 NHL games, scoring 70 goals and 67 assists with 300 PIMS.
Shaw currently has the third highest cap hit of all Montreal forwards, behind only Tomas Plekanec ($6 million) and Max Pacioretty ($4.5 million). He slots in slightly ahead of Brendan Gallagher ($3.75 million) but keep in mind that Gallagher’s extension covered four RFA years and two UFA seasons while Shaw’s is the opposite – four UFA years and only two RFA seasons.
Montreal now has 41 players under contract with a pair of restricted free agents (Daniel Carr and Phillip Danault) still to re-sign. Of those 41 players, two are eligible for contract slides, Noah Juulsen and Michael McNiven.
In terms of the salary cap, the Habs are about $8.6 million under with those two still to sign.
