On Tuesday, the Habs took care of one of their restricted free agents,
signing Dale Weise to a two year contract. As per club policy, financial
terms of the deal were not disclosed but it is believed to be worth $2 million
total. Weise proved to be an important
bottom six winger for the Canadiens after being acquired from Vancouver in
exchange for defenceman Raphael Diaz prior to the Olympic roster freeze in
February.
2013-14 proved to be a career year for the the 6’2 right winger.
Between the Habs and the Canucks, he posted 16 points in 61 games to go along
with 59 PIMS and a +3 rating; with Montreal, he had three goals and an assist in
17 contests. Those 16 points trumped his production for the rest of his
career combined (14 points in 118 games prior to this past year). His ice
time jumped considerably when he joined the Canadiens as he went from 7:45 to
10:06 per game. Weise also averaged over two hits per games with Montreal,
one of only three players to do so, the others being defencemen Alexei Emelin
and Douglas Murray.
Weise was one of several Habs who really picked up their offensive game when
the playoffs rolled around. He posted seven points (three goals, four
assists) in 16 games. What was particularly impressive was that two of his
three tallies were game winning goals while the team won four of the five games
in which he recorded a point; the one game they lost was their final game
against New York. He led all Montreal forwards in hits with 40, one ahead
of Max Pacioretty while logging a similar amount of ice time per game (10:14).
With him signed, the Habs now have a trio of restricted free agents to sign,
forwards Lars Eller and Ryan White plus defenceman P.K. Subban. They have
until June 30th at 5:00 PM EST to formally tender a qualifying offer. All
three players are also eligible for salary arbitration, they have until July 5th
at 5:00 PM EST to file for that. Montreal can also take any of them to
arbitration, they get until July 6th at 5:00 PM EST to do so.
