The Habs added some prospect depth on the second day of free agency, as they
announced that they have inked undrafted free agent winger Stefan Fournier to a
three year, entry level contract. As always, financial terms were not
disclosed. He is presently attending the Canadiens’ development camp after
spending the past five years in the QMJHL.
This past season, Fournier was captain of the Halifax Mooseheads, the team
that won the Quebec league title as well as the Memorial Cup. He recorded
his second straight 30+ goal and 30+ assist season (35 goals and 37 assists in
66 games) while adding 100 PIMS (a team high) and a +17 rating. The 6’3
winger picked
his play up in the postseason, collecting another 29 points (including 16 goals
to lead all QMJHL scorers) and another three points in the Memorial Cup.
In his junior career, Fournier collected 212 points in 289 regular season games
while adding another 44 points in 40 playoff contests.
The signing gives the Habs 40 players under contract out of the maximum of 50
with a quartet of RFA’s still to be inked. However, three of the players
under contract are likely to return to junior and thus would not count against
the limit so there is still room under the limit to sign or acquire several more
players this offseason. Presuming Gabriel Dumont re-signs and makes it
through waivers to return to Hamilton, the Canadiens will have nine forwards
signed for that team so expect some more players to be inked for the Bulldogs
this summer.
Other Notes:
– Fournier was teammates with Zach Fucale, the Habs’ 2nd rounder from last
month’s draft.
– Montreal has three of the top twelve goal getters from the 2013 QMJHL playoffs
– Fournier (#1), Jeremy Gregoire (drafted 176th overall – T-8th), and Sven
Andrighetto (drafted 86th overall – T-12th).
