Of the many tryouts that the Hamilton Bulldogs invited to training camp, one
of them is sticking around. Shortly after announcing another round of cuts
(their second in as many days), the club has inked defenceman Antoine Corbin,
now formerly of the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders, to a one year AHL contract.
The remainder of the invites have all been cut.
Corbin completed his third full season on the Western circuit last year but
it was a bit of a down season for him. The team won just 21 of 72 games in
2011-12 and only one player on the Raiders recorded a positive plus/minus
number. Corbin tied for the team lead in games played by a defenceman
while his career high 12 goals led all blueliners. The 20 year old sat second in
assists by a defenceman (13) and points (25). He also recorded a -17
rating (which shockingly was second best out of Prince Albert’s d-men) and 112
PIMS. This year, the 6’3 Corbin played in a couple of games
with the Raiders prior to attending training camp where he collected a pair of
goals to go along with four PIMS and a +1 rating.
Two other junior defencemen were vying for that final defence spot on
Hamilton’s roster. Etienne Boutet, who was cut late last night, has
returned to Rimouski of the QMJHL while Kevin Gagne, who had an assist in the
preseason, will return to Saint John, also of the QMJHL. Forward Stephen
MacAulay, who was the only player to score in Hamilton’s two preseason games
(both losses to Toronto), was also let go and will join Gagne in reporting to
the Sea Dogs.
These cuts follow up on a pair that came shortly after Monday’s preseason
loss. Forward Bobby Farnham, who impressed in the early stages of training
camp, was given his outright release while Phillipe Lefebvre, who had five goals
and six assists in 69 games with Hamilton last season, was assigned to Wheeling
of the ECHL. This leaves 25 players with the team, including injured
rookie Morgan Ellis. Unlike the NHL, there are no roster restrictions in
terms of how many players are carried on the roster at any given time. Here is a
