It didn’t take long for the Habs to fill the contract spot that was opened up
with the departure of Andrei Kostitsyn to Nashville on Monday morning.
Shortly after noon, it was announced that the team has claimed enforcer Brad
Staubitz off re-entry waivers from the Minnesota Wild.
Last season was a career year for the tough guy as he picked up career highs
in goals (4), assists (5), PIMS (173), and games played (71). This year
hasn’t gone so well as he was pointless in 43 games with a -7 rating and 73 PIMS.
He was waived after a loss in Vancouver where he was criticized for bailing out
of fighting when the team needed a lift but wanting to go with the game out of
reach, something that apparently has been common this year.
He also has played 4 games with Minnesota’s farm affiliate in Houston,
collecting 9 PIMS with a tough -5 rating. He makes $600,000 this year ($575,000 cap hit) and
will be unrestricted on July 1st. As he was claimed off re-entry waivers,
the Habs will only responsible for the pro-rated portion of $300,000 in salary ($287,500 on the cap) as the Wild
will eat the other half of the contract. The Habs once again are right up
against the 50 contract limit.
