With the prospect signing deadline less than 48 hours away, Bob Gainey went to work, signing W Gregory Stewart and G Loic Lacasse to 3-year, entry level contracts. As per team policy, financial terms were not released.
Stewart, an 8th rounder in 2004, had 24 goals and 15 assists with the OHL champion Peterborough Petes this past season, to go along with 83 PIMS and a +18 rating. With no affiliation agreement yet in place with the Edmonton Oilers, Stewart will have a legitimate chance of cracking the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs roster.
Lacasse, a 6th round choice in 04, had a 12-15 with a 4.03 goals-against average with Baie-Comeau and Drummondville this season, but took over the starting job in the playoffs. Given the uncertainty with Montreal’s goaltending situation, he could find himself backing up Jaroslav Halak in Hamilton, the starter or backup in Long Beach (ECHL), or, he may find himself back in juniors to hone his skills for one more season.
The deadline to sign 2004 draftees is June 1st at 5 PM EST.
