CANADIENS vs LEAFS – JAN 28, 2006
First Period
Play Coverage
The 1st period of this game was, for the better part, filled with broken play. Both defenses held their oponents in check very effectively. There were a few periods where both teams put on the pressure. The Canadiens had more times where they pressed the Leafs, but the Leafs shots seemed to be more threatening than those by the Canadiens. The slight advantage by the Leafs on shots on nets is likely the result of the one minute 5-on-3 in the middle of the period.
During all penalties, the attackers put some pressure on the defenders, but were not successful in scoring, except for the exceptionally quick-bounce-off-the-boards-pass by Allison to Tucker, who scored from a tight angle. No one on our team was to blame for that goal.

Second Period
Play Coverage
Another period which was evenly divided. Even though the Leafs greatly outshot
the Canadiens, it seemed to be more the case that the Canadiens shots were
hitting the Leafs defense, whereas the Leafs shots were getting through.
Again, both teams occasionally put pressure on their opposing defenses, but the
goalies, especially Théodore, were up to the task. Kovalev’s goal was a
patented shot by him from an accurate cross-ice pass by Koivu. The Leafs goal,
again, was the result of confusion in front of the Canadiens nets. As with the
1st goal, Théodore was not to blame. His rebound may have ended up on Khavanov’s
stick, but it could also be said that Khavanov happened to be at the spot where
the puck came out.
Jean-Philippe Côté didn’t have much ice time, but he did play well. He
played a simple but efficient game.
It seems like Kovalev wanted to play tonight, as did the whole 1st line.

Third Period
Play Coverage
The play continued to be evenly divided. As with the 1st two periods, It may
sound repetetive, but as before, there were a few times where both teams put
pressure on their opposing defenses. The last two goals were as a result of
errors by the goaltenders – Telquvist’s bad pass behind the net and Théodore’s suspect read on Klee’s shot from the top of the circle. Koivu’s goal (mistakenly awarded to Kovalev) was the result of a
deflection but only a shot toward the nets can be deflected.
Again, Côté did well, especially on a rush by Sundin in the middle of the
period.
Quick Shots
1:00 cdns power play – a bit of pressure but no dangerous shot
2:00 no goal by cdns – net off it’s mount

13:00 Canadiens goal – Bulis on Telquvist error behind the nets – Plekanec pass
to Bulis

Overall Observations
There was much more heart and effort put in by the Canadiens in this game. Even
if the score had gone the other way, our boys didn’t have much about which
to be ashamed. The 1st line, at worst, wasn’t embarrassed during their
shifts and, at best, controlled the play when they were out.
Ribeiro played well. Bulis continued to skate well. Bégin bugged the Leafs when
he was on the ice. Bouillon, aside from the one error held his own. Souray &
Rivet were usually very effective defensively. Interestingly, this wasn’t one of
Bonk’s better games. He was sufficient during the 1st two periods, but was
benched for the whole third period. about. He finished the game with a -1. Even
more interesting was the fact that Zednik was a healthy scratch. He was replaced
by Ivanans.
Most encouragingly, all of the rookies did well again. Plekanec continued to
shine since his return. Higgins was an effective presence on the 1st line. Côté
had a good amount of time which confirmed his solid play. Komisarek did ok too.
Both he and Côté finished with a +1.
It was mentioned that, although they lost 4 games on this trip, they did win two
of three against the teams from their own conference and one of the two against
teams from their own division. That may (or may not) bode well in the long run.
Three Stars – 1) Kovalev, 2) Koivu, 3) Kaberle
