With both Gordie Dwyer and Darren Langdon cast aside, you knew it was only a matter of time before a little bit more toughness entered the organization. The Habs have announced that minor-leaguer Raitis Ivanans has been signed to a two year contract. He has been invited to training camp in September.
Ivanans is a giant of player, standing 6’4 and weighing in at around 245 lbs. The 25-year-old has yet to play a game in the NHL, but last season was a contributing player on the AHL Calder Cup Champion Milwaukee Admirals. Last season with the Ads, Ivanans posted a goal and 7 assists, along with 166 PIMS and a +9 rating. He also suited up in 7 playoff games, contributing an assist and 17 penalty minutes, along with a +2 rating.
Ivanans has worked his way up from the bottom of professional hockey to the AHL where he has played 71 games over the past two seasons, picking up over 200 PIM during that time.
Other Hab Notes: The Canadiens have re-signed assistant coaches Roland Melanson and Rick Green to new deals.
