HW Updates, by Dan Linn
Canadiens Mid-season Top 20 – 10. Maxim Lapierre- C.
(18th) Lapierre makes the biggest jump of all Hab prospects, as he
has shown a great deal of progress from the start of the season to now. Taken in
the second round of the recent draft, at 61st overall, Lapierre has
been able to develop the weaker points of his game, while also improving his
stronger assets. Playing under coach Vigneault seems to be very good for him, as
he has shown a solid effort on the ice, while playing a very gritty hard nosed
game that is lacking from several of the Habs prospects. In addition, he has
been able to find his scoring touch, and has been rewarded with top line ice
time for his efforts.
March 2004 – Playoffs Report – PEI Rocket– The PEI Rocket
will take on Patrick Roy’s team the Quebec Remparts, in the first round of the
playoffs which get started tonight the 19th. The Rocket are coming
off one of their better seasons in the Q, after moving from Montreal to PEI,
lead by Michael Lambert, Cory Urquhart and Maxim Lapierre offensively and tough
guy Jimmy Bonneau as a solid role player. In last years playoffs, Urquhart lead
the team with an impressive 15 points, while this year saw Lambert score over 40
goals, and Lapierre was a all round force on a nightly basis. This should be a
great experience for the Hab prospects, especially Lambert who’s trying to
convince management to take a chance on him and sign him to a professional
contract this summer, or let him reenter the NHL entry draft. Lambert and
Urquhart have formed an impressive duo all season long, with Lapierre joining
the line at times, which has built chemistry between them that should benefit
them down the road when they reach the AHL and beyond.
February 2004 Is developing into a solid all round team
player, while improving on his weakness at the same time. Lapierre has become a
player that is tough to play against, as he will play hard every night with an
intense in your face style. He has been able to improve his offensive abilities,
as they are still in the raw stages of development. Lapierre has been able to
set career highs in every area of his offensive game, while still doing well at
the other end of the rink, and will drop the gloves to stick up for his
teammates.
January 2004 Has improved his offensive production lately,
and has been rewarded by Coach Vigneault with some time on the top line playing
with Lambert and Urquhart, for an all Hab prospect line. This line has been
effective over the last few games, and Lapierre has benefitted from playing with
the gifted forwards, as he too is getting close to setting career highs in
goals, assists and points.
December 2003 Playing on the 3rd line,
without top notch wingers, Lapierre has picked up his offensive game lately,
while still being solid in his own end, and in the face-off circle.
November 2003 Playing on the 3rd line, without
top notch wingers, Lapierre hasn’t been able to produce much offense, but he has
been playing a gritty game. Although he doesn’t have many goals, he does have 3
game winners, which is near the top of the league, behind teammate Michael
Lambert, and he has been strong in the face-off circle at 53%.. Next year should
be a real test for him, as he should receive much more ice time.
October 2003 Playing on the 3rd line, Lapierre is
playing in a defensive role, and has look good on the PK. A gritty, hard working
player, Lapierre won’t rack up the points, as at times he has tough guy Jimmy
Bonneau on his wing.
September 2003 In his 2nd season, Lapierre will
be looking for an increased role on the team, but will need to work on his
offensive game to warrant increased ice time. So far in six games, he has picked
up one goal, three assists, 13 penalty minutes, while being a -2. 6-1-3-4 13 -1
Known for playing a chippy game and being a pest to opposing teams, Lapierre
will have a few years to work on his offensive game, while learning much under
coach Alain Vigneault. Has been solid in the face-off circle so far.
