For most people, that time and place signified one of the most important drafts in NHL history because it provided the opportunity for "the next one," Sidney Crosby, to find a home in the NHL; it also signaled a new era in the league: it was the post-lockout draft, and optimism was running high for the NHL's future. With a new CBA in place, and Crosby's fresh face serving as the new emblem of the league, there was good reason to expect a flourishing NHL in the not-too-distant future.
